潘太太十周年致詞稿

潘文淵文教基金會成立十週年慶祝大會暨頒獎典禮已於2006年6月30日假台北遠東國際大飯店舉行。適逢積體電路技術自美國引進台灣30周年，因此特別展出潘文淵先生與台灣IC產業故事的回顧展，同時發表半導體技術在我國落地生根以及枝繁葉茂的專書「矽說台灣--台灣半導體產業傳奇」。會中高齡91歲的潘文淵夫人亦提供精采致詞，鼓勵產業後進。致詞稿文字如下：

The Pan Wen Yuan Foundation’s 10th Anniversary Celebration and Awards Ceremony was held on June 30th, 2006, at the Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei. The event coincided with the 30th anniversary of the introduction of integrated circuit technology to Taiwan from the U.S., so an exhibition was also held to take a look back at Mr. Pan Wen Yuan's contributions to Taiwan's IC industry. At the same event, Silicon Taiwan - The Legend of Taiwan's Semiconductor Industry  , a book about how the seed of semiconductor technology made its way to Taiwan and proliferated, was announced. During the event, Pan's 91-year-old widow also gave an exhilarating speech to inspire the industry's current generation. A translated transcript of the speech follows:

史院長、各位首長、各位來賓：
時間過得真快，想不到潘文淵離開這世界已十年了，今天為了紀念他，我就趁這個機會向各位談談他的為人和他的人生觀，為什要為國效勞。簡單的講，可以分為三個階段：

President Shih, esteemed guests: Time has flown by—it is hard to believe that ten years have passed since Dr. Pan Wen Yuan left this world. To commemorate him, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about Pan as a person, his views on life, and the reason for dedicating himself for our country. Simply put, his life can be viewed in three stages:

1. 研究聖經 - 學到做人的原則
2. 交大的校訓 -「飲水思源」
3. 老師Dr. Terman的愛護及教導

- Studying the Bible; learning how to conduct yourself. - The Jiao Tong University motto: Remember where your blessings came from - The mentorship and guidance of Dr. Frederick Terman at Stanford University.

他父親把他送到嘉興的秀州中學，是一個很普通的教會學校，在那邊他學到了基督的理論。到了高中的時候，他自己研究聖經，而且是一個很忠實的基督徒，他的行為和思想，儘量依照聖經來作他的指導，因此他學到了修身和做人的原則。在高一的時候，他開始計劃將來要學工程，也想要進有名的工程大學，目的是要進交通大學，可是依照他的中學程度，希望實在很小，因為他中學程度對理科和數學，實在不合標準。如果要達到這個願望，就必需要苦幹，要利用這三年的假期來補習數理，用功學習，除了自己研究之外，再找老師指導。經過了三年的準備和苦幹，終於考上了交大。使他非常的興奮，從此，他學到了辦事一定要有個具體計劃，有恆心、有信心、能苦幹，才能成功。
進了交大之後，他對於母校非常的尊敬，他說：校訓「飲水思源」這四個字，含有深刻的意義，我當尊敬這四個字，將來離開交大時，也永遠把「飲水思源」這四個字記在腦中。

His father sent him to Kashing High School, an ordinary Christian school where he learned the teachings of Christ. By senior high school, he was studying the Bible on his own and was a devout Christian. As much as possible, he looked to the Bible as a guideline for his actions and thinking. In this way, he learned how to conduct himself and shaped his moral character. In 10th grade, he aspired to study engineering in the future, and wanted to attend a prestigious engineering school. He set his eyes on Jiao Tong University, but his middle school grades afforded no optimism, as his aptitude in math and sciences was below par. To achieve his goal, he needed to work hard. He decided to fully commit his three years' worth of vacations to additional studies in math and sciences. Aside from studying diligently on his own, he also enlisted the help of a tutor for instruction. After three hard years of preparation and tireless effort, he got into Jiao Tong University. He was thrilled. From then on, he learned that to achieve anything, he needed to have a concrete plan, and that persistence, confidence, and hard work were crucial to achieving success. After being accepted to Jiao Tong University, he had great respect for the school. He once said, "The school motto, 'Remember where you came from,' carried deep significance. ”He vowed to always honor it and to keep it forever in his heart after leaving the university.

1935年他在交大畢業後，正好交通部要招考五名研究員，並要造一個無線電台在上海郊外的一個小鎮”流項”。目的是要”Open circuit with Manila”，這也是我國第一次與外國通訊。文淵對工作認真、努力研究和設計，並對於電台的貢獻很大，部長張嘉浩曾給他兩次”傳令嘉獎”，並派他到去Manila實習半年，回來後，他更改進電台的技術。同時他也申請美國的學校，準備出國深造。當初他第一志願要進Stanford，第二是Michigan，那時，他通知了張部長，向他辭職，張部長也很鼓勵他，而且還給他在美國的三年留職留薪，準備外匯給他。

In 1935, after he graduated from Jiao Tong University, the Ministry of Transport was holding an examination for 5 researcher openings to build a radio station in the small town of Liu Xiang outside Shanghai. The goal was to "open circuit with Manila". This was also the first time China communicated directly with another country. Wen Yuan was dedicated to his work and spent a lot of effort in research and design, providing significant contribution to the radio station. He received two commendations from Minister Zhang Jia-Hao, who sent him to intern in Manila for 6 months. Upon his return, he further upgraded the radio station with new technology. Meanwhile, he applied to schools in the U.S. with the intention to further his studies abroad. His first choice was Stanford, with Michigan as his second. He had informed Minister Zhang and turned in his resignation. Minister Zhang offered encouragements and even allowed him to keep his position and would wire him salary for the three years he would stay in the U.S.

1937年夏天，他就準備出國，可是那時日本鬼子侵略我國，不斷的轟炸我們的蘇嘉鐵路，炸傷的人很多，他很有勇氣，冒著危險，不顧一切去上海搭最後的一隻美國船，總算平安的到了美國。

In the summer of 1937, he was preparing to leave the country. However, it was during the time of the Japanese invasion, with incessant bombing of the Suzhou–Jiaxing railways. Many were injured in the bombings, but Wen Yuan was both bold and fearless, and risked everything to reach Shanghai to catch the last ferry to the U.S.. Eventually, he arrived safely in the U.S.

進了Stanford大學一年後，Dr. Terman很欣賞他的為人和他的優良的成績，他們的感情一天一天的增進，可是好景不常。忽然張部長來電報，他說：「國內戰事惡劣，外匯停止，你快回來工作。」正在走頭無路的時候，他只能去見Dr. Terman，給他看了電報，他說：「我不得已，只好向你辭行了」，這也是他一生最痛苦的時候，當時Dr. Terman愛才心切，他說：「你現在回去，實在太可惜了，如果你念完博士學位，不但增加你的學問和Lab的經驗，將來你為國家的貢獻那就更大了。」文淵說：「這是我本來的計劃，可是沒有經費的來源，我沒有辦法念下去。」當時Dr. Terman說：「我正在計劃要寫一本書- Radio Engineering Handbook，並且要找一個適當的人來幫我的忙，你做事又快、又正確，我想有你幫我忙的話，很可能縮短我出版書的時間，我給你獎學金，你再替我管理實驗室，這樣你就可以解決了你目前的問題，也可以安心的念書了。同時我來寫信給張部長，替你解決目前的問題。」後來他又給文淵助教的職位，那時他收入豐富，能專心的攻讀和作研究的工作，因此他和Dr. Terman在一起的時間很多，兩人相處了三年之久，非但學到他的為人、他的人生哲學、以及做人的原則、辦事公正無私，努力服務社會、為人類造福。

A year had passed at Stanford. Wen Yuan had forged a growing bond with Dr. Terman, who appreciated his character and outstanding academic aptitude. However, all good things must to an end. A sudden telegram had come from Minister Zhang, who told of the war and deteriorating conditions in China, that wire transfers had been blocked, and that Pan should return to China for work. Wen Yuan had nowhere to go but to turn to Dr. Terman and show him the telegram. "It's out of my hands, I must say good bye," he said. This was the most excruciating moment in his life. Dr. Terman, however, was not to give up on such talent. "If you go back now, it would be a pity. If you can finish your Ph.D., not only will you gain valuable academic and lab experience, you'll also be able to better contribute to your country in the future," said Dr. Terman. "That was my original plan, but without funding I cannot continue," said Wen Yuan. Dr. Terman replied "I am planning on writing a book, Radio Engineering Handbook, and need the right person to assist me. You work fast and do things the right way. With your help, I may be able to finish the book sooner. I'll give you a scholarship, and on top of that you can manage the lab for me. That'll solve all your current worries so you can concentrate on your studies. Meanwhile, I'll write to Minister Zhang so we can get this resolved for you." Dr. Terman later also gave Wen Yuan a teaching assistant position. He had plenty of income, so he could focus on his studies and research work, and as a result he spent a lot of time with Dr. Terman. They spent three years together, and throughout, Wen Yuan learned from Dr. Terman his character, his life philosophies, and his principles; how to do things the right way, give back to society, and contribute to mankind.

1940年完成了博士學位，當時他和Bill Hewlett出版了一篇文章”Calpits Oscillator”，HP的第一個作品是Audio Oscillator賣給Disney做卡通的音響。他們兩人都是Dr. Terman的得意門生，也是很好的朋友，當時Bill要文淵和他合作，Bill表示「只要每人出資本一百元，我們可以在車庫中開公司，合我們二人之力，將來要做大企業家，希望很大，而且中日戰爭也不知何時解決，交通斷絕，你反正不能回去，正是一個好機會。再說合我們二人的頭腦，想些新產品，並不是難事。」他的想法，實在是很有道理，但是經過了仔細的考慮，文淵覺得交大的校訓「飲水思源」比賺大錢還要重要，所以決定放棄了這個良好的機會。

In 1940, he obtained his Ph.D. He and Bill Hewlett co-authored a paper titled Colpitts Oscillator. HP's first product was an audio oscillator, sold to Disney for audio production of their animated film. The two of them were favorite protegés of Dr. Terman and were good friends themselves. When Bill asked Wen Yuan to work with him, Bill had said "We each only have to pitch in one hundred dollars. We'll open a company in the garage, with the two of us working together, we have a good chance of making it big. The Sino-Japanese war is not ending anytime soon, and transportation has been cut. You can't go back anyways, this is a good opportunity. Besides, with our brains, it's not hard to come up with some new products." The idea made sense. But after careful consideration, Wen Yuan felt that his alma mater's motto, "Remember where you came from", was more important than money. And so, he decided to pass up this opportunity of a lifetime.

後來忽然發生了Pearl Harbor的事件，美國參加抗日戰爭，美國國防派Dr. Terman去Harward和MIT兩個Lab做秘密的Radar工作，那時老師又找文淵去Boston幫他做秘密工作，他當時的職位是Research Associate of both Harward & MIT，從此又和Dr. Terman相處兩年之久，當和老師到華盛頓開秘密會議、磨練，因此又學到了政府工作，得了好多經驗。
總之，他開始是得了聖經的理論，作為他做人的基本，進了交大，又學到「飲水思源」的校訓。最後遇到世界聞名的Dr. Terman，兩人在一起五年之久，在他那裡多年的學習，非但增加了很多學問，還學到了做人的原則，因此他常說：

Then Pearl Harbor happened suddenly, and the U.S. was thrusted into war against Japan. The U.S. Department of Defense assigned Dr. Terman to labs in Harvard and MIT to work on confidential radar work, for which he recruited Pan to Boston to work the research associate position at both Harvard and MIT. Wen Yuan got to spend another two years with Dr. Terman, attending secret meetings with him in Washington and doing hard work. He learned about working with the government and gained invaluable experience. So, he began with the teachings of the Bible as the foundation to building personal character, then went to Jiao Tong University and took the motto "remember where you came from" to heart. He eventually met the eminent scholar Dr. Terman and spent five years with him. Throughout their relationship, Wen Yuan learned more than just academic knowledge, but also about principles in life. And so he often says:

1. 做什麼事一定要有一個具體的計劃
2. 做人必須公平無私，要有信心、有理想、有魄力
3. 要抱著犧牲的精神，為人類服務、為國效勞
4. 要把握機會，來達到你的目的

- To do anything, you must have a concrete plan - You must be fair and have confidence, dreams, and resolve. - You must be altruistic, serve mankind, and contribute to your country - You must seize opportunities to achieve your goals

去他常和我說：「積體電路的成功，我不過是貢獻一個計劃而已，我不敢居功，經過了許多的風浪和困難，終於成功了。」看到今日經濟繁榮，人民生活水準提高，這種成績完全是靠了我們當時的基本委員(指胡定華、史欽泰等人)的努力和他們苦幹的精神，加上TAC人員的熱心幫忙，像一個大家庭，合大眾之力為國效勞。

He had often said to me in the past, that "I only contributed one project to the success of the IC industry. I don't claim credit for it. After so much hardship and turmoil, it has finally succeeded." We look at how the economy has prospered, how the quality of life has improved, it's all thanks to the hard work and relentless spirit of the committee members (referring to Hu Ding-Hua, Shih Chin-Tay, and others). In addition, the TAC members have also been proactive in helping. It's like a big family, all pitching in together for the good of the country.

今天大家團聚一堂，不僅是為了紀念一個人，重要的是為了堅定一個崇高的理想和發?一種寶貴的精神，永遠為中華民國貢獻自己的一切。

We are gathered here today not merely to remember one man, but to reaffirm a noble ideal ─a precious spirit of selflessness and dedication to the Republic of China.

最後我要謝謝基金會的所有辦事人員，史董事長、羅執行長，以及所有的董事們，他們不但犧牲了許多寶貴的時間，又慷慨解囊，他們的熱心，我非常的感激。 

Finally, I want to thank all the staff at the Foundation, Chairman Chih, Executive Officer Mr. Lo, and all the board members. They have devoted both their time and resources with great generosity, and I am deeply grateful for their dedication.

希望這個基金會能永遠存在，前途光明。基金會今天出版新書，希望能影響下一代的年輕人，再來創造新生活運動，為國效力。

I hope that this Foundation will be around forever with a bright future to look forward to. The Foundation published a new book today in hopes bringing influence upon the younger generation, to inspire them to recreate the new life movement, and dedicate themselves to the nation.
